Education

The University of Michigan Health pharmacy innovations & partnerships (PIP) services offer a range of educational opportunities for pharmacy students in ambulatory care settings, including Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs), Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs), and pharmacy residency programs.

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs):

  • IPPEs provide pharmacy students with early exposure to ambulatory care settings, allowing them to observe and participate in patient care activities under the supervision of preceptors.
  • In ambulatory care clinics at the University of Michigan Health system, IPPE students may shadow pharmacists, observe patient consultations, and assist with medication reconciliation and patient education activities.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs):

  • APPEs offer pharmacy students immersive experiences in ambulatory care settings, allowing them to develop advanced clinical skills and knowledge.
  • In ambulatory care clinics at the University of Michigan Health system, APPE students may participate in comprehensive medication management, disease state management, medication therapy management, transitions of care services, and interprofessional collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • APPE rotations may be tailored to the student’s interests and career goals, providing opportunities to focus on specific areas within ambulatory care such as diabetes management, anticoagulation clinics, geriatrics, or specialty clinics.
  • P4 APPE students engage in journal clubs, topic discussions, and patient case presentations throughout their ambulatory care rotation, fostering critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and effective communication skills.

PGY1 and PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Programs:

  • The University of Michigan Health PIP services offer PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents a variety of experiences in ambulatory care.
  • Pharmacy residents in ambulatory care settings work alongside experienced preceptors to provide direct patient care, manage complex medication regimens, collaborate interprofessionally, and engage in chronic disease state management.

Residents also have opportunities for precepting, preparing them for future roles as clinical pharmacy specialists or faculty members.
